Years Revolving
Cayla McKay & Abby Hodes

Our piece portrays the clearance of sins on Yom Kippur. On this holiday, we wash away our sins as God forgives us to make room for purity in the year to come. In our project, we wanted to display forgiveness through the lens of regret. Someone who felt their sins weighed them down from the past year needs a light shined down on them from G-d. We portrayed this idea using the symbol of the cloud lit up with lights. These lights shine down onto the verses of the Torah once the fans are pulled open. When a viewer pulls one of the strings intertwined through the fans, this collapses the fans, which uncovers our Torah verses. This represents the washing away of sins that occur on Yom Kippur. As God forgives our sins, we appreciate his words and the forgiveness he said would happen on this holiday. The motion sensor connected to the LED lights activates the lights when these fans move. This demonstrates G-d shining light on us once we are filled with purity instead of sin. In the middle of the board is crackle paint. The black paint cracks to reveal white underneath, symbolizing a layer of sins cracking away on Yom Kippur to reveal the purity that will guide us through the year to come. On either side of the crackle paint is raindrops. On the left side of the board are clear raindrops fading into black, to eventually a black mirror on the bottom. The raindrops represent purity washing away before Yom Kippur and fading into darkness, representing sins. The black mirror at the bottoms shows how sins can disguise your true identity, and through Yom Kippur, we must find forgiveness to find ourselves. On the right side of the board are black raindrops fading into clear raindrops. This symbolizes our sins being washed away on Yom Kippur and the clear mirror on the bottom represents us being able to see our true selves after washing away these sins.
