Sacred Time: Alternate Universes

For our project, Ari and I chose to represent the idea of sacred time with the duality of camp and the outside world. On the outside world, we have a toy car that continues to go around the track playing music. The song that should be playing is “20 min” by Lil Uzi Vert. This song was chosen specifically because it takes approximately twenty minutes for both Ari and me to get to school. To show how the atmospheres between the camp and the outside world are so different, there are trees separating the car from the camp. Inside the trees, there is a camp bunk on top of grass (turf) with a bunk bed and children praying outside for Kabbalat Shabbat on the “beachside”. This turf that the bunk rests on is used because both  Soccer and Baseball (sports we play at camp) have turf fields. Just like we experience Shabbat at our own respective Ramahs, Shabbat really is a sacred time because it is fully separated from the rest of the week and the rest of the world.  Lastly, our Jewish text will be displayed on our walls to symbolize that Shabbat is a sacred time that protects us from the other 6 days of the week just like the walls in our house protect us from the outside world. With our project on fusion, some of the materials cannot fully be shown which is why the physical project is that much more meaningful. First off, on the outside ring that is used to symbolize the outside world, it will be painted like a road to really try to emphasize the noise of vehicles on the highway. Secondly, the trees that separate the outside world in fusion fully block the inside. With the physical model, while the trees are covering it, you are still able to see the “inside world”. Inside the world, there is a bunk that is able to be seen through the trees. You will look through the trees and see our Jewish text displayed on the walls to symbolize that Shabbat is a sacred time that protects us from the other 6 days of the week just like the walls in our house protect us from the outside world. Inside CAD, you are not actually able to see all the pieces together and how the text “pops out” on the wall. For all of these design elements, there is a minimal amount of color on Fusion so seeing the actual colors together helps to create that sacred time vision of camp that Ari and I tried to portray.
