The Escape of Shabbat

Artist Statement
Bubble
The clear bowl, or bubble, represents how shabbat is like a protection from the rest of the world and our escape from the artificial world. We feel that shabbat is a time when we can clear our minds and focus on God’s gift of nature. When you look through the top, you can see shabbat clearly but if you look in other directions its blurry.
Animals
We made animals to show how we connect with nature on Shabbat and they are a natural, beige, color to stick with the theme of naturalness.
Grass, trees, and bushes
The grass, trees, and bushes are made out of soft materials like leather, moss, and tissue paper to signify the delicacy of Shabbat and connecting with nature. Ww use lots of green to show how we get away from everything artificial.
Flowers
We made our flowers with lots of pastel colors because they are warm and pleasing colors. They are made out of felt because it is soft. They symbolize our connection to the natural world on Shabbat.
River
Our river is very natural and made out of silk to show the softness and delicacy of shabbat. We also made it a moving piece by drilling holes in the wooden board so you can pull a piece of silk as if it was a flowing river.
Cloud with fairy lights
The cotton in the clouds symbolizes a fluffy warm-hearted connection with God. The lights signify how God will shine on us on this holy day. The light brightens up the area of our project with shows how powerful and sacred God is.
The Digital rendition differs from our physical piece because the textures, colors, and objects look slightly different. The river on fusion is solid rather than a flowy silk material. The grass is lighter and has a rough texture while in the physical version, the grass looks more realistic and mossy. The digital flowers are solid and have stronger colors compared to the soft fabric and pastel-colored flowers we glued on in class. The trees and bushes we are creating in class are made out of leather and tissue paper. The ones we made online, do not have the same feel and texture to them. The cloud we will create is going to be soft and fluffy, while the one on fusion will look more solid. Overall, the main difference between the physical and digital versions of our project, is that the digital contains different textures and materials than the one we made in class.
