Repeating Routine vs. Free Routine
Rose Berman & Rachel Nadelmann
Rachel and Rose’s Sacred Time Project includes half sandpaper, symbolizing the roughness of a daily routine, and half blue silk, symbolizing the ocean and the freeness and wildness that comes with the night. Additionally, the base will look somewhat like a beach, hence the sandpaper and blue silk and the relationship between those two, forming a close connection to the rough routine life, and the free nightlife, symbolizing that they are extremely close in time, but far in symbolism. Our motivation was really our own daily lives and trying to find the balance between the two: the day and night. Displaying what days feel like was our goal and we expressed it by have loops and roughness on the daytime and having more of an open concept on the night time. In the center of the base, there will be a rotating girl, with a motor wearing a silk dress (moving part). She will be rotating or twirling around the sandpaper and silk or the rough routine or freeness, which signifies her struggle to have a healthy relationship with both. She will be wearing the blue silk dress because it shows that she wants freedom, but that is not always possible.. Next, there will be animals: squirrels and bats, these will be in their respective categories, to signify squirrels are daytime animals and bats are nighttime animals. The significance of the sign being on top of the board standing is to show that the quote is always watching over us and that the quote applies to the essence of time. The quote is quite literally explaining the functionality and basis of time. One of the main points of our design is the lights, which there will be two of- on the side of the night there will be purple LEDs, and on the day side there will be white led lights. White lights are on the daytime because they are lighter and they go around in a loop like a routine. We will code them to rotate, to further the feeling of constant repetition; which we want to show because that is how daily life feels. The white LEDs will light up in a pattern or a loop to symbolize how everyday life is a loop and this will be done by coding. The UV LEDs will either flash when the girl turns to them or always be on to show the want to be free. These LEDs will cast a shadow over the rotating girl in the center, and the animals as well. The shadow represents the overwhelming thoughts of stress derived from daily life. The shadow also represents the thoughts of longing for the night where you can be free.
COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN ELEMENTS
Students utilized industry standard 3D modeling software, Fusion 360, to model elements of their artwork. Fusion 360 is a cloud-based 3D modeling software platform for product design and manufacturing. Typically used to design and engineer products to ensure aesthetics, form, fit, and function.
