Carousel of Shabbat
Alex Lefkowitz & Jesse Schiffman

IMG_2550.HEIC

Our art piece is a heptagon base with a center heptagon pillar. On each side of the pillar will be one day of the week, represented by colors, objects, and weights of various representations (Ex: Paper clips, dead leaves, rain, sandpaper, ect). The seventh side of the pillar will be a Shabbat panel represented by light colors, clouds, and leisurely activities. The reason we call it a carousel is because there will be a hollow cylinder that fits in a grove that will be laser cut into our base which will then be able to swivel . There will be an opening on the cylinder that will have  this piece connected to the opening. On this piece will be our person and with this handle, you will be able to turn/rotate the cylinder. Then you will be able to let the person cycle through the week.

Meaning:

We call it the carousel of time because you have the ability to make the person go through the cycle of the week over and over again like we all do. Another part of the message is that throughout all time, no matter what, there's always Shabbat at the end of every week. It is a tradition that lasts forever.

Reflection:

Although the original goal was to make an exact copy of our fusion design, this was not the case in the end. Our original design had our quote laser cut on the center block, but due to time constraints and the size of the block, we couldn’t and ended up writing it in sharpie on the border of our base. We also had a plan to set up arches that would hold up the track, but when we set it up in real life, it blocked some of the main pieces so we decided to scrap that idea. We kept the idea of the center pillar being surrounded by an incomplete, 3D printed cylinder so that only one side/day of the week is visible at a time. Then the viewer can rotate both the cylinder and the human figure by moving the handle

We believe that the deeper meaning still stands; you can take the person through the cycle of the week to Shabbat over and over again endlessly.
