Day and Night

Our project is our artistic interpretation of G-d’s separation of day and night. The message of our piece is to show how day and night are both sacred times, and in order to live a happy and healthy life we need to balance activity and rest. We have a heptagonal board that is split down the middle by a wooden stick. The stick shows the roughness of the transition between day and night. We see the transition between day and night rough because there is never a clear switch. It gets darker and darker and darker until it is finally night. There is never a clear switch between day and night. One side of our project is white, this represents the day. The white is a bright and vibrant color that symbolizes the active aspects of the day. We have a baseball bat and a baseball on that side of the board, we also included a basketball hoop with a basketball. Both the baseball and the basketball items are activities that are common throughout our day. We 3d printed both pieces with white filament to stick with the theme of the active day. On the other side of the board we used black paint to symbolize the darkness and rest of the night that was given to us by G-d. We feature a book with the text that we based our project off of [God called the light day and the darkness night (genesis 1:5)]. The book symbolizes rest because reading is restful and relaxing. We also feature a bed because beds are where people sleep. We printed both pieces from black filament to stick with the theme of black for rest. On both sides of the board we have two boards in the back that are both painted according to their side. On the white, active side, we have two boards that are painted with a brick pattern. They encase the basketball hoop and basketball. We did this because we think of the outdoors when we see brick. Typically on the outside of a building. On the other side we painted the blocks like a night sky, with a moon, stars, and shooting stars. We incorporated this into our design because it symbolizes the night and in the night we rest. Our moving piece is a balance beam in the middle of the board to show how the rough difference between day and night also needs to balance to live a happy and healthy life. Balancing working hard during the day and resting at night. The balance between day and night leads to a happy and healthy life because after a day of activity we have a night's rest so we are not overworked and it is enough time that we are not over rested. There are only slight differences between the online model and the model that was made by hand. In real life the project is not as neat, we had to use hot glue and paints which made a bigger mess than just being a certain color or perfect seam. The stick that splits the board in half cannot be rough in the CAD model because the stick in real life is from the outdoors. It is imperfect and has marks and holes in it that would be near impossible to recreate in CAD. This changes the meaning because the stick in real life shows the rough split of day and night whereas the CAD model cannot show that clearly. The CAD model is also perfect bricks and the painting is imperfect, so the bricks in real life are more realistic because bricks are never perfect. The boards on the back of the black side are also painted as a starry night which were painted by us and that is not represented in the CAD model. Both sides of the boards are not properly represented in the CAD which changes the perspective of the viewer because in the real world not everything is perfect like in the CAD.

COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN ELEMENTS

Students utilized industry standard 3D modeling software, Fusion 360, to model elements of their artwork. Fusion 360 is a cloud-based 3D modeling software platform for product design and manufacturing. Typically used to design and engineer products to ensure aesthetics, form, fit, and function.
