The Silent Game
Yael Zimmerman, Ella Marcus, Devora Friedman

We decided to focus on the balance between truth and lies that Esther Hamalka had to maintain while in the palace of Achashverosh. On either side of the border are the two pasukim we used to represent this theme:  אין אסתר מגדת מולדת ואת עמהdescribes how Esther refrained from telling anyone who she really was to preserve her own safety and that of theJewish people.

כי נמכרו אני ועמי להשמיד להרוג ולאבד

Is when Esther finally reveals the truth she had been withholding, in order to protect the peace of her nation.

The base consists of four separate pieces that interlock. The true nature of what

was happening was unclear, and Hashem was concealed for the majority of the Purim story. Only at the end was the truth of His grand plan revealed, and it was clear how all the pieces fit together.

On the rim of the base is a golden zipper, because Esther’s lips were sealed, and ‘silence is golden.’ A circular chess board symbolizes the continuous cycle of truth and lies, or omitting the truth. We elaborated on this point by having black and white squares represent how Esther needed to tread carefully between truth and lies, planning her every move many steps ahead, which is how chess is played. Our piece rotates on an axis because Esther’s world turned upside down, but she continued to stand tall and do what needed to be done to maintain the peace. The black squares are pebbled, because lies are sharp. The queen is between truth and lies, switching between them as necessary for her people’s peace. She stands on a pedestal, as Hashem raised her up to an exalted position to preserve Jewish peace. The queen is the most important piece on the board, but has no inherent strength, everything depends on who is in control. Hashem was pulling all the strings to ensure peace for His beloved nation. Instead of a crown, the chess piece wears a Magen David, because Esther always identified as a Jew, even as she had to obstruct that truth for the peace of her people.
