Beach Day
Ruth Katz, Leeza Marfin

Our piece depicts two people; one looking at a beautiful beach and one looking at some disgusting trash littered in the ocean. Our theme, truth depends on perspective, relates to "Exploring Tension and Harmony Between Truth and Peace" because the person standing on the beach doesn't see the trash but the person on the boat does, and therefore they have an argument. This is the opposite of peace and shows that there are many di erent sides to truth. This project is based on the story of the spies. In that story there are spies being sent out on a mission to scout out the land of Israel. Some spies have a negative perspective and say that the land is overrun by giants and there is no way that the Israelites can conquer it, while the other spies have a positive perspective and say that the land is flowing with milk and honey. This relates to our project because the person on the boat has a negative perspective on the beach and can see all of the garbage littered in the ocean. The person on the beach does not see the garbage and thinks that the ocean looks beautiful.

We made this piece with resin, paint, laser cut wood, laser cut plastic, sand, and 3d printed people. First, we lazer cut the wood into a 12x12” square. Then, we glued sand onto the wood. After that, we cut wood to create a boat and painted it along with the sand and water. Then, we poured resin onto the painted water to create a glossy e ect. Finally, we 3D printed two people, one to put onto the boat and one to put in the sand. While creating this project, we learned how to saw the boat with power tools and how to code the laser cutter to cut specific letters into plastic plaque. At first, we tried to pour resin onto the wood before we painted it. However, the paint completely hid the resin; so we decided to pour another layer of resin over the paint to give it the nice glossy finish that we had wanted in the

first place.
