The Tree of Truth and the Ladder to Heaven
Sanchi Halper, Elana Ernst, Hadas Binstock

“Truth shall spring from the earth and righteousness shall look down from the heaven” -Psalms 85:11

"אמת מארץ תצמח וצדק משׁמים נשקך"

When my group was brainstorming ideas of truth and peace, we thought about what makes us feel peaceful. Immediately, we thought about nature and our hidden truths. Our tree has notes attached to its branches. This was our attempt to represent truth springing from the Earth as if the notes/truths are growing from the trees. We also thought about the aspect of heaven in our quote and decided to attach a ladder, our own “Stairway to Heaven”. Our tree is clearly not very neat, but nature is messy and so is the truth. Life isn’t clean unless it’s not genuine. Life is messy and while the truth makes it messier, lies make it ingenuine and artificial. Is life worth living if it isn’t made of truth and peace? The ladder that is propped up against the tree represents the ladder that connects us to the heavens and to righteousness. Ladders go up and down which means that you can gain righteousness, but you can lose it as well. Are we truly righteous if we are not truthful? We 3D printed a clear base for our tree and then began wrapping it with wire. We had to restart it multiple times but in the end, it came out pretty well. Sanchi designed our ladder that was lasercut and then wrote the quote on it. Then, we used the same wire from the trunk to start making branches by twisting the wire. We had trouble attaching them, but they ended up looking pretty cool. We wrote our “truths” on colorful paper and then attached them to the branches.

Although the truth isn’t always pretty, this art piece is.
