Artist statement:

1-Dini For our Project we chose to represent sacred time by focusing on davening and what it means to individuals. The story in Shmuel aleph that we discussed in class talks about Chana’s struggles with Elkanah and Penina. In the story, Chana is struggling with the realization that she is unable to have a child. After Davening intensely to G-d, promising her future child to him, she finally gave birth to Shmuel. To represent davening we chose to quote Verse 10 Shmuel aleph ,wretchedness her in: “to translates thisְ '' ו ִ֖היא ָ֣מַרת ָ֑נ ֶפׁש ַו ִּת ְת ַּפֵּ֥לל ַעל־יְהָֹ֖וה ּו ָב֥כֹה ִת ְבֶּכֽה׃ “ states which she prayed to the LORD, weeping all the while. We selected this quote because it exhibits the proper Kavanah needed for davening; by stating that Chana is weeping while davening we know that she is davening with all her heart. In Judaism when learning about davening we are always told that we must daven with Kavanah; we are also told that davening is a way to connect us with Hashem.

2- Alice To represent what prayer means to us, we chose to symbolize davening by having a symmetrical 3D printed siddur in the middle of our board. Inside the siddur, there are mirror shards to give texture to our board and to emphasize our project because we want to convey how important it is to self-reflect when we pray. Whether it's asking or thanking God for something, we must look back on ourselves while talking to Hashem. Another aspect of davening we wanted to show is the connection it gives us to G-d; the well-known philosophy of “ bein adam limakon” is something that we wanted to represent because praying falls under the spectrum of “bein adam limakon” (between man and god) therefore, we wrote those words on the top of our board. 3-Moshe Chana asking God for a child is between her and Hashem, so we thought it was important to have that representation. Another way we chose to represent the connection that davening gives us is by having a cloud on the left side of the board. The cloud represents God and the lines of string that connect to the siddur are a representation of the connection davening gives us with god. To convey the purity and peace that G-d represents, we have a color scheme of light colors like white and light gray. Davening to G-d helps us feel connected and we wanted to demonstrate that in our project.
