The truth and peace beneath the waves
Shaya Zorel, Hannah Talpins

Our art piece is used to represent the two values of truth and peace. These themes are carried on throughout the design and displayed in the physical model. The inspiration behind our art piece was a jewish text that states; “Is it not that in the place where there is strict judgment, there is no true peace, and in a place where there is true peace, there is no strict judgment”(Sanhedrin 6b). This text discusses the importance of having both truth and peace, this quote essentially elaborates on the concept that you will never achieve complete truth without peace and you will never achieve complete peace without truth. This idea of truth and peace motivated the thought process of our design that is depicted throughout the waves. The waves are representative of both truth and peace, this is because when a wave first appears in the ocean it is very calm looking and peaceful however when it crashes down onto the beach it expresses more of a harsh appearance similar to the truth. When the truth is told it is not necessarily something people anticipate to hear and it may not be what they were expecting, similar to a wave crashing down on the beach it can leave someone feeling unsettled and distressed. These interconnected elements return to the central theme that you can not achieve peace and truth without each other. We choose to represent the first wave with clear blue plastic because it represents something calming and soothing to look at just like the ocean. This wave slides across our board in order to symbolize a wave crashing, this relates to truth and peace because they are harsh and most of the time aggressive emotions to deal with. Regarding the 2nd wave, its colors are light blue to look realistic and have a smooth top. The 2nd wave represents the end of the beach, and coming onto shore. Lastly, the last wave which is a dark blue has many currents to help emphasize the crude and vile reality of truth and peace.

The Cad and physical models are generally very similar. Some differences are that the physical model has the quote on the walnut wood base instead of the moving wave because when the wave was cut, the quote wasn’t legible. The wave that moves has a shimmery blueish color that can't be captured on Fushion 360. This color portrays a calmness and easiness, related to peace. It helps create the overarching theme that truth and peace must be with each other and you can’t fulfill one without the other.
