When The Sun Rises
Matthew Simon & Sophia Spigler

Our motivation for this project stemmed from the 10 commandments representing the building blocks of modern Jewish law. The evolution of Judaism has developed from the times of our ancestors that we read in the Torah each week. From understanding how to be kind to a stranger in your neighborhood to resting and rejoicing on Shabbat. The variety of laws and commandments from God not only gives us a path to follow in unison but also allows us Jews to observe Judaism in all different ways. Although we are all connected through the increase of Judaism, we also have our own interpretations and ways of honoring where we are today. For instance, Orthodox Jews observe Shabbat in a stricter manner than someone who is Conservative or Reform. In addition, there is a variety of traditions and customs that families have been doing and will continue to preserve for generations to come. Each of the three members in our group, practice different ways of upholding our Jewish tradition but we all understand our connection through Judaism as a whole. For the physical aspect of this project, we are using LED lights to enhance the illustration that is on the elevator structure. This represents how Judaism keeps going up after we received the 10 commandments. These lights convey the true meaning of how Judiams fill up our lives with light and reinforce our Jewish traditions. The clear acrylic that the lights will be on also hold many symbols that we will etch on. The different stages of a plant becoming a tree represents not only the growth of our nature, but the evolution of Judaism. It is a clear representation of how we are able to grow and in the end become a tree with multiple branches that spur Judaism, like a family tree. The LED is able to make the etching stand out but still give away to look into the true meaning of Judaism. Also, the clouds that will be placed on the project not only assist the depiction of our structure being a elevator going up in the sky, but in addition, it shows how Judaism will continue to go up and grow from where we are all the way to the clouds. Our CAD design differs from our physical design as it captures a more meaningful message with further details to entail what we mean to represent through our structure. Having our design online shows the overall purpose of the design but it doesn’t encapsulate the true essence of our project. First, the board on our CAD model is empty, as it seems to simply portray our elevator and nothing more. It is pretty plain but it does have the etching of the acrylic and the basic structure of our main design. In real life, we wanted to enhance the idea of nature further than what is on the side walls so we placed moss all around the board. This will give it a more contrasting look, nature all around a modern “building” to show the true diversity of Judaism and how far we have come, from ancient times to modern present day. Also on the real structure, a sun will be moved up by the pulley system in coordination with the plant etching, as the sun goes up the plants grow. It also symbolizes time in general and how time has changed us Jews. The LED lights will actually light up the etching on the acrylic on the true model. Then lastly, cotton ball clouds will be scattered around the top part of the elevator to show the true lengths judaism has come. The CAD model simply has less details, and we strive to create a fulfilled space that represents every aspect of the evolution of Judaism.
